Abd ar-Rahman I. Doi

Born in India in 1933, Doi was awarded a Government of India merit scholarship to join the University of Cambridge as a research scholar. Here, he obtained his Ph.D. in 1964 under the supervision of Prof. A.J. Arberry. During this time, he also studied Law at the Hague Academy of International Law. Doi was then posted to universities in Nigeria, where he eventually became Professor and Director of the Center for Islamic Legal Studies. His opinion was most sought after when the first Islamic banks started to appear globally, initially in Egypt and Sudan. Here he wrote his very famous book, Sharia The Islamic Law, which is currently the standard text book in 164 countries of the world. He passed away in 1999.
